Faucets are made from different materials, of which five types are the most common. Besides that, they have different finishes, which are almost countless. Let's find out the different main materials and look inside our faucets.
Brass
One of the most widely used materials, brass is the undisputed leader with around 40-44% of all faucets in the world. Most residential and commercial fixtures around the world are made from brass. This popularity is deserved because of its high durability and corrosion resistance properties.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel, especially type 304, accounts for around 30-34%. Unlike materials like brass, stainless steel doesn't have a coating. It's the same material all the way through. That's one of the reasons why it is commonly used in kitchens, and the food industry, as it can't chip or peel like a faucet with a finish.
Plastic
The new wave of faucet materials is plastic. It's widely used in budget-conscious households due to its appealing price, and has its place in minimalist design as well.
Other materials
Among other materials, the most common are copper, and zinc. These are good materials, widely used in different faucets on their own, or as alloys.
Insides
Even though faucets are made from different materials and finishes, they also have internal components made from a ceramic material (ceramic discs), which are used in almost every faucet.
Finishes
Finishes are often mistaken for the material itself. However, it's just a coating on the surface of the faucet. The most popular finishes are chrome and nickel, used as protective layers on faucets.
